4th Conference: Surgery in Palestine – Updates and Prospects

The Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University in Gaza held its fourth scientific conference in collaboration with the Palestinian Surgeons Association titled Surgery in Palestine (Updates and Prospects) on the 13^th and 14^th of October 2011.

Dr. Basem Naim, the Minister of Health, Eng. Jamal Al Khodari, Chairman of the Board of trustees at the Islamic University, Dr. Kamaleen Sha’at, President of the Islamic, Dr. Mofeed Al Mokhalalati, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Sobhi Skaik, the Vice President of the Surgeons Association,  Dr. Marwan Abu Saada, Chairman of the scientific committee of the conference,  Dr. Jehad Hammad, Chairman of the preparatory committee of the conference, a number of members of the Legislative Council, a group of doctors and staff of the Ministry of Health, and medical students attended the conference.

The conference discussed different aspects related to the surgical specialities in Palestine in order to constitute an important addition to the medical practice in the Gaza strip.

The participants of the conference presented research papers reflecting the nature of surgical practice in the Gaza strip, especially endoscopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, heart surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, pediatrics surgery, neck oncology surgery, liver and bile duct surgery, retrograde endoscopy of the gallbladder ducts, vascular surgery, and neurosurgery.

The conference recommendations emphasized the importance of the commitment to proper behaviour inside operating rooms, wearing the gowns by both patient and medical staff, adopting methods of proper scientific research, relying on evidence-based medicine in medical surgical practice, in addition to supporting rare medical specialities, training qualified staff in a variety of fields and caring more about local blood banks.
