Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Unit

Established in 2011 by the Faculty of Medicine, the Evidence-based medicine unit aims at increasing the use of best-available research information in clinical decision-making, integrating clinical experience and patient desires. The unit has arranged several workshops on EBM and the means whereby it can be implemented on the ground. These workshops were a step up towards the 5th and 6th conferences by the faculty, which discussed the current and future trends of EBM in Palestine.

The International Foundations of Medicine (IFOM®) exam

The Faculty of Medicine at IUG is the first and only authorized test center for the IFOM exam in Palestine, which is conducted by the International Foundation of Medicine of the National Board for Medical Examination, the same body that sponsors the USMLE exam. Internationally, the Faculty of Medicine is among the first sixty universities to be licensed to conduct the exam. The IFOM® exam is computer-based, with specific security and technological requirements imposed by the IFOM under the supervision of the IT department in the Islamic University.

University Hospital

The Palestine-Turkey Friendship Hospital is the sole university hospital in the Gaza strip, built by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) at a cost of 70 million dollars. It is currently partially operational as an oncology hospital. The hospital provides several halls and a variety of medical facilities, which are utilized by the faculty in educating students.
When operating at full capacity, the hospital will accomplish several aims, including:
  • Training students and physicians and raising the level of health services in Gaza.
  • Creating an academic reference for medical practice.
  • Minimizing medical referrals abroad as they overspend the health budget.
  • Attracting medical staff from inside and outside the country to contribute to health services in Gaza.
  • Encouraging local scientific medical research.
A fully operational Palestine-Turkey Friendship Hospital will serve an estimated 30000 patients annually, as well as train an estimated 500 medical students, 800 nursing students, and 400 allied health services students.

Telepathology

Established in September 2013, the telepathology unit facilitates the transfer of high-quality pathology images using telecommunication to pathologists outside Gaza for the purposes of diagnosis, education, and research. This unit reduces the impacts inflicted by the suffocating blockade imposed on Gaza Strip, such as travel bans. The unit includes the iScan Coreo AU Virtuoso processor, which is the most advanced telepathology device; it is the third in the Middle East.

Skill Lab

The educational process in the faculty of medicine integrates skill courses into curricula. Within these courses, clinical skills are honed, and attitudinal awareness is promoted.
These labs sought to accomplish the following:
  • Train students in clinical skills.
  • Instill self-confidence and fill the gap between practical and theoretical knowledge.
  • Provide an environment simulating field training environment.
The Skill Lab of the Faculty of Medicine consists of many modern devices and 3D models which are helpful for students. There are models and devices for obstetrical, surgical, and medical procedures, as well as other clinical skills such as mechanical ventilation and first aid topics.
